Baritone Tom Meglioranza muses, “Reading the novel [The Picture of Dorian Gray] was an early part of my preparation process, and everything that I found so compelling about the book—the horror and depravity mixed with intoxicating sensuality and sparkling wit—is brought to life in Lowell’s brilliant music. That said, this is not one of those operas where you need to read the novel or even a plot synopsis beforehand to get what’s going on. The opera is so vividly theatrical, and there are so many great lines and plot twists, that I think experiencing the story for the first time in Jordan Hall would be exciting and fun.”
