X: The Life and Times of

Malcolm X

Anthony Davis is perhaps best known for this opera, which enjoyed a sold-out premiere production at the New York City Opera in 1986.  This revised version stars Davóne Tines, Musical America’s Vocalist of the Year, and will be held in Dorchester’s Strand Theater, just blocks away from Malcolm X’s Boston home.

In October 2021, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project announced As Told By: History, Race, and Justice on the Opera Stage, the most extensive and ambitious presentation of opera by Black composers to ever take place in the US. With Odyssey Opera as a presenting partner, Anthony Davis’s X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X is the first production in the As Told By series, five operas that depict vital figures of Black liberation across 250 years of history.
