American mezzo-soprano Sandra Piques Eddy is a former New England Regional Winner of the 2000 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and a National semi-finalist, making her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2001; her Met roles include Cherubino Le Nozze di Figaro, Lola Cavalleria rusticana, Zulma L’italiana in Algeri, Rosette Manon, Mercedes Carmen, Dragonfly L’Enfant et les sortilèges, Third Handmaiden Sly, Countess Ceprano Rigoletto, Third Naked Virgin Moses und Aron, Flower Maiden Parsifal. and Olga The Merry Widow. She more recently appeared at the Met as Fiona in Nico Muhly’s Two Boys; she sang the Novice and Abbess Suor Angelica and covered the roles of Sycorax The Enchanted Island, The Pilgrim L’amour de Loin, Dorabella Cosi fan tutte and Maddalena Rigoletto.
The artist’s recent productions include Rosina Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Witchita Grand Opera, her revival of the role of Paula Florencia en el Amazonas at Nashville Opera, and Dorothee The Anonymous Lover at Boston Lyric Opera. She appeared in previous seasons in Portland Opera’s When the sun comes out, in which she played Lilah, Desiree A Little Night Music in the UK at Opera North, and Maddalena Rigoletto at Opera Colorado.
Past highlights include the role of Dinah Trouble in Tahiti with the UK’s Opera North, and six role debuts, including Meg Page Falstaff at Opera Colorado, the title role of Orfeo ed Euridice at Portland Opera, Suzuki Madama Butterfly at Inland Northwest Opera, Paula Florencia en al Amazonas at Pittsburgh Opera, Adalgisa Norma at Boston Lyric Opera and Mistress Revels Prince of Players at Florentine Opera, the recording of which was nominated in 2018 for a Grammy Award.
A highlight of Miss Eddy’s career is her work in Japan: invited by Maestro Seiji Ozawa, she appeared at his Tokyo Music Academy in her signature role of Carmen and toured with the production in two separate seasons; at Hyogo Performing Arts Centre she sang Cherubino and Dorabella and she also appeared in gala concert performances. Other international engagements include Rosina Il barbiere di Siviglia at New Zealand Opera; her first production of Carmen in the title role in a new Daniel Kramer production (2010) at Opera North (UK), where she also achieved great success as Poppea L’Incoronazione di Poppea. In Canada, Miss Eddy repeated her performances of Cherubino at Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, and she sang both Rosina Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Isabella L’Italiana in Algeri at Vancouver Opera.
